Charles & Ray Eames
Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Charles Eames grew up in Americas industrial heartland. As a young man he worked for engineers and manufacturers, anticipating his lifelong interest in mechanics and the complex working of things. Ray Kaiser, born in Sacramento, California, demonstrated her fascination with the abstract qualities of ordinary objects early on. She spent her formative years in the orbit of New York modern art movements and participated in the first wave of American-born abstract artists.
The couple married in 1941 and moved from Michigan, where they had met at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, to Los Angeles and established an office together. With a grand sense of adventure, Charles and Ray turned their curiosity and boundless enthusiasm into creations that established them as a truly great husband-and-wife design team. Their unique synergy led to a whole new look in furniture. Modern and minimal. Playful and functional. Sleek, sophisticated, and beautifully simple. That was and is the “Eames look.”
This Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman from Vitra is the white version of the classic and original lounge chair designed by Charles and Ray Eames in 1956. Now manufactured under licence from the Eames estate this paler reinterpretation of a design classic comes with a white pigmented walnut shell, white premium leather upholstery in three complementary hues and a polished aluminium base. It is available in two sizes – the original classic dimensions as well as the new larger dimensions – created in 2010 – to allow for the increase in average human height since the chair was first launched in 1956.

Eames Rosewood Lounge Chair – Black Leather & Black Base
Faithfully reproduced by Pash
Mid-century modern but an old favourite too.
A perfect contradiction – the Rosewood Eames Lounge
Chair was designed as an update of the traditional,
English club chair using unashamedly modern and
luxurious materials. The result, recognised as
an instant classic on its 1956 unveiling, is something
that is at once both sophisticated and contemporary
yet also familiar and timeless. Charles Eames described
it as having “the warm, receptive look of a
well-used first basemans mitt.” You do not have
to be a baseball fan to understand what he means
the first time that you sink into the seat.
Made of moulded plywood over an aluminium
frame with soft, high quality leather, the Lounge Chair
becomes an old friend the moment it first enters your home.
Shown here with a rosewood veneer, black Italian leather upholstery and black base.
